Plants used by Native Americans

Howdy fellow Utah gardeners!

I'm at the American West Heritage Center in Wellsville--up by Logan. We're a living history farm and museum that covers the period 1820 - 1920. One of our interpretive areas is a Native American encampment. We'd like to plant lots of useful plants that Native Americans might have used. The Shoshone tribe is helping us, and I know a few things myself, but I'd love your thoughts on what native plants were useful to both Native Americans and Pioneers last century.

Thanks heaps!

David

Welcome to the Utah forum!
Let me know when your living museum is ready for visitors and the kids and I will come check it out!

As for your question....
I was told years ago that the Shoshone used either blue or black cohash to help with childbirth and other female ailments.
I tried which ever one it was to get me into labor with one of my children, it did not work.
Maybe I used blue instead of black or black instead of blue... either way, my son came when he was good and ready and not a moment before! He is still that way! LOL

Have you got Bill Varga involved at all? I know that he has taught a class in ethnobotany at USU. Lately he is mostly involved with the new gardens in Kaysville.
