Growing Okra

I am originally from the south and now live in Northern Utah and would like to grow Okra. Any tips anyone has found successful? For example, how much water and when do you plant?

You might get away with planting it now. I grow both green and purple. It is so hot the seeds germinate quickly. The plants are pretty tough and take less water than tomatoes.

I grew up in Texas and when I saw the okra plants on "Good Eats", I thought they had a gorgeous flower, like a hibiscus (duh). I started mine in the greenhouse and planted them out about 2 weeks ago. They are less than 6" tall, but are growing faster in the ground than in the newspaper pots!! I don't like okra but have a friend who does, so he may get the crop! It will be interesting to see how big they get. I also planted cotton for novelty. They aren't doing as well.

never grown okra, but have grown its close cousin manihot. it grew 7' in about 3 months. we have a shorter season than the south, but longer days and more intense light. i think you will do fine. if fall is mild, it think you might still have time this year if you plant now.
