New sod watering advice needed.

Posted by jbooker Utah (My Page) on

I live in Cottonwood Heights and just had sod installed last week. My landscaper set up the sprinkler system to run 4 times a day for 15 minutes. How long should I keep to this schedule? I am a new home owner and this is my first yard so I'm a complete novice at this. Any advice would be great!

I would also like to know what watering schedule I should use once my sod is established.

Thanks,
Joey

RE: New sod watering advice needed.

I would water like that for about two weeks, then cut back twice a day for a week, then to once a day for a week, then every other day for a week (maybe increase to 20 minutes at a time), then 3x a week for 20 minutes for two weeks, then twice a week for 20-30 minutes for a week or two. After that, watch your lawn. If it shows signs of stress (turns dull color, doesn't bounce back when you walk on it, etc) water it. Try to water deeply when you do water so that you encourage deep root growth. If possible, try to cut back so you're only watering once a week, although I don't think you'll be able to keep your lawn really green in the hottest part of the summer watering only once a week. But even in the heat of the summer, once the lawn is established, you should be able to water no more than twice a week. I know that most of the lawns get watered a lot more than that, but it's really not as good for the grass to water so much once it's established.
