cloning a cherry tree

I had 6 very old cherry trees in my yard. (old orchard) Within a month all died except one. I would like to clone this tree for historic reasons.(as well as being darn good) It is a standard (40 ft) height, semi-tart.(it takes about 1/2 cup of sugar for a pie.) It is not a mont-maurency. I don't know what it is. I have no idea of compatibility, or what process to use. Is there anyone who can give me information or help with this task.

Instead of cloning, can you graft it? I tried grafting years ago and never had much success, but I was trying to do it from pictures I found in a book.

I think that you should be able to graft this onto another cherry tree, even one that isn't very good. If you take a real young tree and basically cut it off near the bottom and graft a branch into the trunk, it'll be the tree you want except for the roots.

Here is a website with some instructions on grafting.

Something we used to do with some trees was to make a cutting from a young stem--cut the stem off at an angle, then stick it in sand and keep the sand damp for a few weeks. Some trees will develop roots that way, but I don't know if cherry trees will.

You might want to post this on the tree forum (I think there's a tree forum on GW).

Yes, it's the Fruit & Orchards forum (see link). You can either search for similar questions (graft cherry) that have already been answered, or submit your question and wait. Unfortunately, I only have young trees that are still years from producing, and I haven't tried to graft anything before.

Here is a link that might be useful: Fruit & Orchards on GW
