Dying tomatoe plants!!!

Posted by perfectsadie UT (My Page) on

Is anyone in the Cedar City area having trouble with tomatoes wilting and dying for no apparent reason? We've had successful gardens for years but this year our tomatoes are in bad shape. Anyone have any thoughts on what could cause this?

Thanks

RE: Dying tomatoe plants!!!

Lost about half of the tomato plants I started in the greenhouse this year. We rotate our crops, so I wonder if it's something in the soil. Don't know if it's virus or wilt or what. Only a few red tomatoes so far, mostly green baseballs. This cool weather might hurry them along! Not enough produce to enter into the Iron County Fair this year, last year I had lots. :(

Pawsitive - Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering with grocery store tomatoes. If it's a virus or fungus do you know if the winter freeze will kill it or would it be better to wait a year or two to plant tomatoes again? I don't know if I could live w/o fresh tomatoes another summer...

Hey, Pawsitive mentioned only having green tomatoes so far. I'm having the same problem, and I was happy to see a thread on the Rocky Mountain forum about how you can ripen tomatoes indoors after cutting the vine off when the weather gets too cool. It sounds pretty cool, and I'll probably be doing that in a month or so, depending on how soon our nights freeze. Check out the link below, which has a good, detailed description of how to do it.

Skybird (the mother of the RMG forum) says she was picking ripe tomatoes off her vine, hanging in her garage, into January.

Here is a link that might be useful: Ripening tomatoes indoors

I had the same problem last year. This year we used a copper spray on the tomato plants as soon as they showed any problems and had a bumper harvest. Couldn't find it in town so we ordered it off the internet.
