%@&* deer!!

Heard an incredible ruckus outside this morning that sent the chickens squawking and flapping. Looked outside and it was a yearling deer hopping the fence. Must have hit the one piece of metal roofing tucked back in the corner. So when I went out later to feed chickens and check on the garden, there was plenty of evidence the deer are coming out of the hills. They left several "piles", stripped the leaves off my new plum tree, ate some of the broccoli, ATE MY LETTUCE that I just put out for a fall crop, and ate the strawberries. Time to cover and wrap I guess. Next they will be working on the peppers and tomatoes. If only they would eat the weeds.....sigh......

RE: %@&* deer!!

There are a lot of deer hunters around here and the common yarn around the local casino bars is that deer retreat into the mountains shortly after hunting season begins.

I wonder if gardeners could use firecrackers or some such to scare them off, or do they really have to be threatened by hunters or if this is all malarkey.

The bow hunters insist that deer are spooked by cosmetics. Has anyone tried dousing the perimeter of the garden with a cheap fragrance from WalMart?
