autumn/winter color

Hello Utahns. I am just wondering, now that autumn is here: what looks good in your yard in autumn/winter, either by choice or by happy chance?

Here is my happy chance: a hedge of 5 yellow-twig dogwoods with purple-leaf wintercreeper in front. The wintercreeper turns purple just about now, and the contrast with the yellow branches of the dogwood is very striking. It's almost as colorful as it looks in summer, (there are perennials between the wintercreeper and dogwoods), and the colors last all winter. I find myself looking out the window almost as much as I do with the perennials in summer. That is, when it's not covered with snow!

I used to plant only for the warm season, but am finding that winter is more bearable if there is something interesting in the yard to bring a smile.

What have you found that looks good in autumn/winter?

In my yard I like the ornamental grasses. Some put on a red and orange color and others are yellow. They also remain standing through winter if snowfall isn't too heavy.

I like those yellow-twig dogwoods, too. The red twigs in winter are great. Just last week, my yellow-twigs were at peak fall color, as were a row of Peking Cotoneasters. Unfortunately, that last storm blew all the leaves off. But there's a few photos at the link below. If you click the little photos, you'll see bigger versions.

Oh yeah, my Viburnum trilobums were looking great this past week, too. Nice and red. Now they're getting pale.

We just had our yard landscaped and I don't know much about gardening, but I love my burning bushes! They look so dramatic next to the green grass.
