Memories

This is the slow forum on the garden web. I want to share something with all you Utahns out there.
Theirs a nasty storm going on outside, wind and cold and blowing rain/snow. I am wondering if any of you dedicated Gardeners remember loved ones with flower associations? When I think of my grandfather I think of Giant Peonies he had may and loved them all, he was so proud of his single petal climbing white rose and his hedge of yellow roses. My Dad loved heavenly blue Morning Glory and Bright little Marigolds. Von [my step dad] It was Daylilies and Lilies of any kind, He passed away last year on 12/29. I went to the house and rescued all I could, so I now have many lilies and I don't know the name of a single one. Mother ??? she was not a plant lover but I remember her teaching me how to make Hollyhock dolls using tooth picks. It was so much fun I passed this on to my girls as well. My brother Gary [killed in Nam 1969] Loved Yellow Roses the bright color and the wonderful smell he said made him remember "HOME" and all the thing that go with being Home. My Sister Becky [Died of a drug overdose] Maiden pinks and trumpet vines she gave me tons of magic Lilies, every August when they bloom I thin of her. The Yellow Rose hedge out back came from Gramp's garden. these are for gramps and Gary. All around me I have reminder of those that have passed. Each one in the form of a Flower, Makes me feel all warm an fuzzy inside, Like each one lives on in my Garden. Hugs to all this holiday season!!!

RE: Memories

In zone 4 you may not be far from me here in Cache Valley. I have two of those you're talking about:

1) My mom loved lilacs. I haven't planted any because of the short blooming season and general untidiness of them, but probably will this spring in her memory.

2) My mother-in-law was born in Hawaii and loves bird of paradise flowers. She has told us all that at her funeral that is what she wants. Can't really grow them here as far as I know, so never tried.

Thanks for nice thread.

RE: Memories

My beloved grandmother's name was Pansy, and I always plant pansies in a planter in the spring. Her real love was roses. I have a few rose cuttings from her home that the current owner of her home graciously allowed me to have last year. They are struggling on my window sill, but are still alive. They won't live outside in our zone 4 climate, I'm certain, as they came from a much warmer zone 8. But, one of these days when they're big enough to take cuttings off of, I will try some outside.

RE: Memories

My Mom and her Dad (My Grandpa) both loved roses. @Linda, you may be able to graft your roses to a hardy root-stock, check w/ your local extension office about how to do it.

My Dad was more a veggie and fruit tree grower, not so much anything ornamental; unless it was a sapling from the mountains, like an Quaking Aspen, or a yucca offset from the desert. His mother also had quite the rose garden.

Plants that I particularly remember from my childhood are:
Iris, Tulips, Forsythia, Cherry, Peach, Apple, Peonies, Hens-N-Chicks, Yucca, Red-Leaf Maple, and of course, Roses.
