RE: Poinsettia

I bought three from walmart for .02 ea after Christmas. One in each of the kids rooms, two have died, one is going strong. My grandma used to keep them till summer every year. Her's were in a north facing living room window. The two that died already were in N windows and the healthy one is in a W window.

I have mine in a north facing kitchen window.
I just inherited another one from work last night.
I never realized until this year that they come in colors other than red.
I am going to research and see if i can get them to rebloom.

From what I've read recently they need short daylight hours to bloom. The N window is probably helping them stay alive by not providing too much light.

They might be tricked into blooming w/ some artificial lighiting on a timer.

I still have some from last year but they're very tall and leggy and all of the leaves are at the top. I don't know what to do with them, but I can't bring myself to just toss them out.

I think that in order to get them to bloom you have to put them in the dark for a period of time, based on what a lady I work with told me. I don't know why hers aren't tall and leggy like mine, though.

The one in my sons room is still going strong. I think next year after Christmas I'll be picking up a few dozen for $.02 not just 3.

You know, I had every intention of keeping mine alive.. but I have to admit I forgot about it. Soo.. it's dead. Oops.

I'm in the same position as BobbiC, mine is alive, but very leggy and pretty unattractive. I know I won't go though all of the trouble to have it bloom again, but just can't bring myself to pitch it.

I wonder if maybe pinching new growth off would stop them from getting leggy? I need to do some research online...
