What to plant in Virginia

| Hello!
We just moved here from Michigan and I'm trying to figure out the best flowers/vegetables to plant. We have a lot of shade in our backyard and more fun sun/partial shade in the front yard. Also, when is the best time to begin planting (especially peas - for my daughter)?
We're getting anxious to begin our garden, especially since it's getting into the 60's and 70's this week!!!
Thank you! |

Hi, welcome to Virginia! There are many more people on here more knowledgeable than me, but I can give you a few hints. I'm in Richmond, and I try to get my sugar snap pea seeds into the ground the first few weeks of February. They are just peeking up now, which seems like they took along time to come up to me.... What are you interested in planting? If you give some more specifics people will perk up hopefully! |

| I grew up in Michigan, though I did not do a lot of gardening when I lived there. As far as perennials, you will find that a lot of the same plants that you could grow in Michigan do fine here. I often swap plants with my mother (in Owosso Michigan). A big difference is that she grows plants like astilbe and hosta out in near full sun and they do fine but those same plants would shrivel up and die in Virginia. You will also find that you have a lot more interesting evergreen shrubs to choose from in Virginia. - Brent |

| In Northern Virginia I plant my sugar snap peas in March and follow the old adage "Your a fool if you don't get your peas planted before April 1st." If you've got a bed ready plant your peas now. |

| Hello, Welcome. Being born and raised in Ann Arbor, you'll going to love it here. You can practically do everything here. I don't do veggies, but as for perennials, there is nothing that won't grow here, even hardy tropicals will survive with a heavy mulching. The rules for annuals are pretty much what you are used to except for maybe pansies and snapdragons. They don't last past the end of may here. |

| I have started the seeds and just waiting to plant in the garden. We have a 50 foot greenhouse we grown things in there too. I live between Richmond and Williamsburg.I am planting in raised hills with cardboard laid down and straw on top of that for weed control. It really works good. |
