I have been gardening for years now, and I recently am trying to grow tobacco for personal use, and was wondering can I plant it near anything or is there a companion for it? or does the plant need to be in a separate field?
I don't know about a good companion for tobacco, but I do know that it is part of the nightshade family and so would be susceptible to the same pests and diseases as tomatoes, potatoes, etc.
I also heard somewhere that you shouldn't walk through a tobacco field (or probably work your tobacco plants) while they are wet because the live plants are somehow toxic so if you brush up against them while they're wet, your skin will absorb the toxins and make you hallucinate. Of course, I can't exactly site my source here, and it might be total hooey :)
VA Tech publications on tobacco growing are intended for commercial production but should give a wealth of information for the home grower, too. There's a link below.
