Crabapples

Hi Everyone
I saw some crabapples for sale at Walmart (can not remember their name sorry) and was wondering if anyone else has seen them and can recommend them. They were at the Charlottesville Walmart and were so cheap. We have 2 acres and want to put in some trees (without too much expense).

Thanks!
Carolyn

RE: Crabapples

Almost everyone plants Crabapples for their decorative value...and they are very showy, However, some use the fruit for culinary purposes.I would strongly suggest that you confer with a local nurseryman. There are several in your vicinity. Or the Internet can provide photos of hundreds of varieties. Best of Luck!!!

RE: Crabapples

My advice is to return to Walmart and get the name of the crab apple variety and post back here to this thread. You'll be able to get a lot more helpful info.

Yes most people will grow crab apple trees because they're showy, but I wouldn't grow them if you have any wild cedar trees growing nearby. The cedar evergreen tree acts as a "host" to a disease called Rust and you'll have to spray them every year from the time they open their leaf buds till June 15. It's a hassle.

On the other hand, I grew them outside of Chicago, with no cedar in sight. The variety called "Profusion" was absolutely GORGEOUS every spring. I didn't give it any special care, just watered it if it was especially dry. Good luck.
