I particularly want to know if it is hardy and disease resistant in our area.

RE: Follow-Up - Crabapple is called Profusion!

We live west of Charlottesville and planted a Profusion crabapple seven years ago. It grows quite well here and has a beautiful red hue to it's green leaves. It seems to grow well even with the drought conditions we've had off and on the past few years.

We grew Profusion in the Chicagoland area which is Zone 4 and it was completely disease free and beautiful every spring. It stopped you in your tracks for it's flowering.

We planted two Profusion crabapples and one turned out entirely different in growth habit and even leaf color. Someone tagged one of the trees incorrectly and whatever hybrid it is, it isn't nearly as beautiful as Profusion.

I will add that our Profusion contracted Rust which is hosted by the wild Cedar evergreens that grow close by. We spray for Rust with Copper Fungicide every 10-14 days starting May 1 and stop by June 15. The leaves do pick up a faint rust color, but the tree seems to grow alright.

If you don't have any wild Cedar evergreens around you, I wouldn't hesitate in planting Profusion. I don't like spraying, but I love the tree. Post back with the decision you make.
