You might like the Japanese Holly (ilex crenata)also called Boxleaf holly. I have it in several places in a good amount of shade, it receives morning sun until 10:30am, then is in fairly heavy shade (3 large gumball trees overhead), they are easy to keep small by pruning, and they also grow slow to moderate. In the photo below you will see an example next to the foreground, next to the red japanese maple.
