I think my crape myrtles got zapped....

Hello,

I bought some small crape myrtles last year on sale at the big box stores and planted them in the Fall. They looked good and started to leaf out a little early this Spring, but I think they got zapped by several freezing nights around Easter. Since then, no more signs of growth, other than some very small shoots coming up from the base. Are all the branches dead now, and should be pruned out, or will growth eventually come from them? I've got some that has growth coming from some branches, but the others are "dead" all the way to the ground.

Thanks for your help.

Hang in there...I suspect the crepe myrtles will bounce back. They are really a hardy tree and I wouldn't cut them just yet. I got two of the mini-crepe myrtles at Home Depot last fall. Put one in the ground and the other in a planter. They were both outside when the cold snap hit at Easter. I'm in Chesapeake, which may be further south than you but it got down to 32 degrees here. Both of my trees are leafing out now. Good luck...Vikki

Be patient with them, don't do anything for at least a little while longer. I bet they're probably alright. I'm in the Richmond area and my crepe myrtle is just now beginning to get going.

I'm in N Va and our 7' crapes haven't leafed out yet. I don't expect them to for another couple of weeks or more. I second the 'be patient'.

My neighbor asked me just the other day if my crape myrtle (and hers) had died because there were no leaves yet. I said, no, they just leaf out late. This is true because just one week later, my crape myrtle is putting out leaves. They are just "late bloomers."

My sister calls me in May every year to tell me that her crape myrtle has died. I tell her to be patient, it's the last thing in the garden to leaf out and that may be as late as early June here in zone 6a.

Be patient, they're tough as nails.

RE: My bonsai crepe myrtle has leaves missing on branches

Good afternoon,

I have a crepe myrtle that has leaves missing on 8 branches. The other branches the leaves are blooming at the tips. One of the branches was bare last year. Should I cut the leafless branches off? I also have a small branch (tree) growing separately at the base of the tree. Should I repot it?

Thank you in advance for your help.
