Organic gardening supplies in Richmond?

Posted by organic_stevek 7 (My Page) on

HI.

Just moved to Virginia (2nd time). I have bought a new home which had sod laid on POOR dirt (note: not soil, dirt). Want to try Organic growing.

I am on the southside of Richmond (Midlothian) and wonder about good places for supplies (like Corn Gluten Meal ec.) for organic lawn care. Organic growing to follow.

Hi Steve,
I tried locating corn meal gluten as well and had a difficult time of it. The closest I got was I think Hudgins Nursery? which is out Hull St./360. Give them a call and let us know if you have any luck, I'd like to try the gluten thing next year.

There is a place up in Ashland, a bit of a drive for you, called the Ashland Feed Store. By far the best selection of stuff for organic lawn care that I've been able to find. They're got the staples (cracked corn, corn gluten meal, and alfalfa meal) and are very reasonably priced.

A 50# bag of cracked corn was under $10, a 50# bag of CGM was just about $25, and a 50# bag of alfalfa meal was $18, I think. I've checked out Southern States, the local Strange's florist, and etc and this was the only place I could find with all of these, and they had the best price as well....

There's also a feed store in powhatan which might be a bit closer, depending on where exactly you are in midlothian.

Here is a link that might be useful: Ashland Feed Store
