Gardenia's in South HIll/Lake Gaston Area

I did a reply on another thread, but then realized that the thread is a year old, so I'm not sure if anyone will see it!
I live down in South Hill and planted an August Beauty yesterday! I planted it near a BIG oak right on my woodline (so I assume the woods will give it some wind protection). The oak tree (and it's acorns) should provide fairly acidic soil. I bought a 3 gallon one, it's probably 15 inches high, and 12 inches across.
How fast do these grow? I know they will get 5-6 foot high and wide.
The bush will get dappled shade from daybreak-8:30 or so, then full sun from about 8:30am-12:30pm or so, then shade the rest of the day. Do you think this is a good place for my Gardenia?

This is my very first Gardenia.

The varieties that are considered more hardy are Chuck Hayes, Klein's Hardy, and Daisy. Are there other August Beauties in your area? Here in Vienna even the hardier gardenias are an impossible dream....I've never even thought beyond the issue of winter cold so my first instinct would be to cosy it up to a brick wall.

Here in Chesterfield there are gardenias that do very well but I'm sorry to say I don't have a clue as to their variety. Most have been around for many years and nobody remembers when they were planted or what they are. I would suggest that you ask around in your neighborhood of anybody that has them growing to see what variety they have (if they know!) Your cooperative extension agent might be of some help, too.
