Luck with Agapanthus? (Lily of the Nile)

I planted some of these 2 years ago with not much luck. But then I read that the roots have to be croweded to bloom. Has anyone else planted these successfully in VA? I don't see them at all - and they are so beautiful!

Tell me the secret once you discover it. I too see them in bloom in garden centers and I keep trying. I have lots of sun and heat but no flowers. You may be right about the tight roots. Might be one of those plants that needs benign neglect and tough love--like bougainvillea.
