June-flowering rhododendron

At my last home, there was a white rhododendron growing down in a gully under mature oaks, hickories and elms, that would bloom in June. Where it was growing was not anywhere I would have imagined someone planting it on purpose, so I assumed it was the native rosebay rhododendron. When I asked at a nursery today, the clerk basically told me I was full of 'misinformation' until I told him I was basing my statements on a real plant. Then all he would say is that the rosebay is native only in Carolina and wouldn't grow here in Fairfax County. Does anyone know what rhododendron this could have been, and where I might purchase one?

TIA

A couple searches and clicks turned up the page below that might be of some help.
