virgina tree with a purple-wisteria looking bloom

Can someone help identify a tree in Virgina that has been blooming duringMay that has blooms like wisteria, only the blooms are upright instead of drooping down. what is it?

Take a look at this tree: Catalpa, also spelled Catawba. That could be what you are seeing. It's a very fast growing tree.

Could be paulownia. A beautiful trash tree.

I think it is paulownia. It is all over I95 exit ramps in central VA. I confused it with wisteria from a distance then until I stopped one day to look for babies then discovered it was actually the tree which was flowering.
