Flowering Maple

At the Lewis Ginter plant sale today we bought a couple of flowering maples. I know I read on the sign that they were supposed to be hardy, but after coming home and doing some research, it appears they might not be. Does anyone know whether we should just put them in pots on the front porch and bring them in for the winter, or is there possibly a chance that these might be of a variety that could go in the ground? (I neglected to note the exact type that we bought- but they have yellow-orange, bell-shaped flowers)We are located in western Powhatan County.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Cheers and Fairwinds,
Brett

Flowering maples are not even maples. They are not hardy.

I wonder how your flowering maples are doing. I grew them in Orlando FL in blistering heat and full sun. They grew, but seemed much less full and lush than in pictures. I always thought they would have done better in a more filtered sun situation, or maybe with only morning sun, but I didn't have those conditions. At the end of the season, I took them down and put them in the garage, where they continued to put out new leaves for awhile. By spring, they were still viable, but I didn't feel like messing around to try to rejuvinate them, so went on to something else. I'd like to give them another try because they're so pretty.

I have them on the front porch of our 1850's farmhouse, where one gets morning sun and the other gets it in the late afternoon. So far, they look wonderful. I pinched one back a bit because it was too leggy, and it's filling in nicely. They'd probably be doing better, but I am in the process of renovating the entire house, so I don't have the time to give the plants and yard too much attention. I'll have to update you later as I learn more.
