 o
burning bush

I have 2 burning bushes that I planted a few years ago. They are both doing really well, each one just a little under 3 feet high now. Is there anything specifically that I need to know about caring for these bushes? They are planted beside my house in full sun, and do get good drainage. They are actually the first plants that I've planted there that have lived. I have never pruned them, yet they look good like they are (to me). I wouldn't mind shaping them...should I do that now or wait until they are bigger?

RE: burning bush

I planted one about 5 years ago and I cannot recall ever doing a thing to it. These things seem to be "the" plant for roadside and median plants. When the drought a few years ago killed or damaged many roadside plantings such as viburnums and dogwood shrubs the burning bushes did not seem to mind. If you really wanted to I suspect you could trim them anytime of year but they have a nice natural shape. Even the cultivar 'compactus' will get pretty big.

I will point out that burning bush (Euonymus alatus) is on the list of invasive plants for Virginia. Below is a link to the document.
