jackmani (sp) clematis

About 5 years ago, I planted a jackmani(sp) clematis at my mailbox. It never got too big over those year, only reaching half way up the mail box post. This year, it's almost covering my mailbox completely and is taller than the mailbox! I've done nothing to it at all...no fertilizing or watering. Why the sudden growth spurt?? It is a 2X bloomer. I have flowers open now (not all of them), and then it's supposed to bloom again I think around fall. But it is not a prolific bloom in the fall...only 1 or 2 flowers, and that is it. I don't know what you call these things, but it will still have the flower "skeleton" (those long stingy things left after the flower has been spent) during the fall bloom. Am I supposed to remove these before the second blooming time? Thanks

There are many possible reasons for the growth spurt. Maybe another perennial is shielding its roots this year. Maybe its roots finally reached a rich mineral deposit. Maybe it likes the weather swings we're having.

Don't know about pruning it; there are different pruning regimens for different cultivars and I'm not an expert on clematis. Jackmanii is widespread; search the clematis forum - they will know.

Thanks juliat...one thing I've noticed though. When I said the clematis only got half way up my mailbox all those other years, this year from that point on down to the ground it is covered with leaves, but no blooms/flowers. Will also post my question on the clematis forum.
