Bad potting soil?

We always plant pots for the front & rear decks. I worked on the back yard deck, and began to observe "failure" with double impatiens, new guiniea impatiens & ivy geranium. The potting soil I had bought at kmart seemed old & heavy. My brother rejected it for the pots he did in the front... his grew lush while mine languised. some actually withering.. I went and bought new potting soild & discovered they had fewer roots then when I had potted them! Could the soil have turned "bad" somehow, or highly acidic or alkaline? I am hoping I repotted them in time to save them.

RE: Bad potting soil?

All potting soil is NOT created equal. I've bought some that I refused to use as it came from the bag and ended up amending it with homemade compost and other stuff. It was still a poor excuse for soil. If you doubt the quality when you open it, take it back and request a refund. Sometimes saving a few pennies is not a true savings.
