How far back to cut chrysanthemums?

For the first time ever, some chrysanthemums I put in near my front stairs last fall have come back in leafy glory. I had no idea I was supposed to cut them back until a friend told me, so I cut them back last week to about 4-6 inches high. Please advise me if I should cut them even further; I would be unhappy if they didn't re-bloom in the fall because I did something wrong. Thanks! I live in Roanoke, if that helps.

You don't need to cut them back further. That should be plenty.

Typically they get cut back by half around now. Sounds like you may have done more, but you should be fine. Don't cut any more.

Thanks for the input! I will leave them alone now.
