Moving to Charleston, WV

I am considering a move to the Charleston, WV area. I have talked to a couple of friends who had lived in Charleston in the past and have recieved mixed reviews. One of them lived there about 25 years ago and the other grew-up in Charleston and moved away about 15 years ago. Both had nice things to say about the area, but both also specifically commented about how heavily industrial the area is (or was) and as a result that there are still (or were at the time) some heavily polluted areas. I understand the history of the area and can imagine the negative impact that long term large scale chemical and mining industries can have on an area. But I would hope that things have changed for the better in the 15 to 25 years since my friends had left Charleston. I would appreciate the perspective of any gardeners out there who live in or around Charleston or know about the area. Also any other coments positive or negative would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

RE: Moving to Charleston, WV

The surrounding mountains are lovely; the natives are friendly. (I've had relatives living in the area. The rest of the natives are really nice, too)

I strongly suggest that you study up on reports on the water and air quality, and the causes for some of the not-good ratings. Big business is big business, and certain companies have had a strong influence on any attempt to legislate for improvements.

link is to one report, which has additonal links upon which the report is based. Additional information can be found through government sites both state and federal.

Here is a link that might be useful: earthday rating
