What is that on the Apple tree branch?

Hi,

I am a fairly new fruit tree grower and last month I noticed this strange things on one branch of my apple tree. I clipped the branch and trashed it but I am still puzzled what it was? It did not seem like a live bug however, when I scraped it off the wood underneath looked dry or dead. Please help.

one of the many scales???

though the way they are lined up.. makes me think insect ...

i cant really focus on them ....

you might want to visit the hardcore fruit peeps.. in the fruit forum ...

cutting off the whole branch.. may have been a bit over the top ... lol .... you didnt happen to touch one.. and look at the underside, did you??? .. i thought not.. lol ..

or the garden clinic/ pest forum ....

Could it be the scars from a cicada laying its eggs?

They are the eggs of katydids. Most wouldn't like to see them on fruit trees. Smush them.

Ken it was a little branch, which should have been pruned anyway :D
Rhizo, I googled Katydids eggs and found similar pictures. Thanks for Identifying them for me :)
