Visiting Wmsburg in April - looking for nurseries

Hi!
I will be traveling to Williamsburg, VA from NJ this coming April and I was hoping to pick up a crape myrtle while down there. I know there are more varieties down south then we have in the garden centers up here. I've been successful with them in my Coastal NJ yard, but I've either ordered them bare root from catalogs or ebay. I now see them in Home Depot and Lowes but the variety is very limited. I'm looking for a nice deep purple one like the catawba or powhatan. And would like to get one that is more than 3 feet high. Can anyone here recommend a nursery or garden center that might be on my route in April and will carry crapes? I really appreciate the help!

Jemboysch,

You won't find much in Williamsburg as far as nurseries go. What is there, won't be stocking until they come into bud and bloom. Further down the road in Hampton and Virginia Beach are McDonald's Garden Centers. In July, they have a big event selling Crepe Myrtles. So you should email them about a month ahead of your trip and see if they are stocking what you need at that time.

The other place to check is Great Big Greenhouse in Richmond. http://www.greatbiggreenhouse.com/
Between those two, they have just about every cultivar that is popular in the trade now.

Seeing how April is the big month for Azaleas here, the main push is on those till early summer at least.

Enjoy your trip!

Jerry

If you are driving South by way of Rt 301 in MD (east of the DC Beltway) you will pass Ed's Plant World in Brandywine MD, near LaPlata or Waldorf. He has lots of crepes of all sizes for excellent prices.

Also, Denison's in Indian Head (just south of the DC beltway, near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge) has a wonderful stock of small trees in general; I got to choose my fringe tree from about 30 nicely-pruned specimens.

There is also Carroll Gardens in northern MD, but they are primarily mail-order -- I was not impressed when I visited a few years back. Woodies were sold by the size of the pot -- and some good-sized trees were wearing theirs like Victorian choker necklaces...

My strategy would be to research a variety you want, then ask a local nursery to get it. You may pay a bit more, but its easier than driving all over with plants in tow. Your state agricultural university should have some info on varieties that do well in your area. Many have been tested at the National Aboretum, and have developed some nice disease resistant ones that can tolerate some cold. Most have Indian names e.g Sioux.
