food pantry gardens

We raise produce for the local food pantry on a 50' X 70' patch. The food pantry is open one evening a week. There is no fence and we have pressure from ground hogs, deer and rabbits. Also, we have no water onsite. We have been giving about a sixth of this space to flowers. Main crops have been tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and sweet potatoes. (Annual report avail. by email.) We produced about above a ton of produce with about 500 hours of vol. help.

Any other food pantry gardens out there? What produce works best for your clients?

That’s very admirable! I don’t have space for a garden the size you do but I informally follow the "Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR)" program started by the Garden Writers Association. I checked with the Prince William County Extension office and they said there is no organized PAR group here but most local food banks accept fresh food so I grow extra tomatoes, peppers, and summer squash to donate to SERVE which has a Food Bank and Transitional housing. They very much welcome any garden produce I can provide so I get to expand my summer hobby while doing a little good.

Here is a link that might be useful: Plant a Row for the Hungry program

I just heard about this through an article on Care2 and I think we're going to give it a try. We just started gardening last year and we had a lot of extra, so now I know where to take it. I'm thinking about offering some space on our property for my son's Cub Scout den to plant a garden and donate the produce, but I suspect I'll be committing myself to gardening an extra spot :)
