I am new to the forum and im building a worm bin like the one that kelly slocum designed.. i added a drain to the bin to let excess moisture drain into a coffee can. i havent drilled holes in my bin yet. i used drain rocks in the bottom( 3/4 to 1 inch rocks) covered in layer of small (1/4 inch rocks) will this work okay? i got the rocks from the side of a dirt road they just spread new rock on so i wouldnt have to go buy a bag. i put 2 layers of like the perforated drawer liner you might use in a kitchen drawer, then hardware cloth then some layers of fine door screening then another peice of hardware cloth( didnt have landscape fabric. will this work for the bottom layer?

I do not have rocks at the bottom of any of my bins. What do you need the rocks for? Besides, the bins will be too heavy once they're full.

Welcome Travis. I used Kelly's bin design at first. She has great info on vermicomposting. I have changed to using a plastic 18 qt tub (like for doing dishes) and no holes in the bottom. You could use any small container to start. I do put cardboard (wet) on the bottom and sides, with the bedding on top - the bedding is shredded cardboard and newspaper with a handful of dirt. This has worked well for 4 years now. Very simple to maintain and to harvest the vermicompost. Keep the bedding moist and pocket feed the worms. Freeze the food for 3 days prior to feeding if you're keeping it in the garage, to eliminate fruit flies and other critters. Hope this helps.

I never drill holes in my 30 gallon indoor plastic worm tubs. Something I have learned is, for anything under 30 gallons, it is more difficult to maintain the desired conditions. It's sort of like aquariums...it's much easier to maintain a 30 gallon aquarium than a 10 gallon aquarium, if properly set up.
