I think they are individual worm castings. I think worm castings have value individually as each is coated with a calcium like substance that separates it from others and helps water store in the empty spaces between each casting. This is the quality I think one should be aiming for. This is what improves the texture of the planting media it is added to. They maybe just showed up because the moisture conditions were just right like a rainy evening for the worms to go for a bit of an exploratory walk about.

Im thinking the look of the castings could change somewhat depending on what you are feeding and what the bedding is.
