The Dreaded Fungus Gnat!

I was hoping that my bin would find a happy equilibrium with the fungus gnats but unfortunately the gnats are gaining ground. The little cat eagerly hunted them down...for a while. Now she doesn't even acknowledge they are flying around her face while she lays on the worm bin. There was even a spider living happily in my window that I caught and put in the bin hoping to feed the spider and cut down on the flying gnats. I think the gnats ate the spider. I haven't seen him since.

So...before my children find yet another fungus gnat in their cereal bowl...how can I get rid of these annoying critters without reducing feeding. Mosquito dunks soaked in water then said water sprayed over the surface every couple days? Yellow sticky fly paper? Physically squishing the adults...cause that's not really putting a dent in the population no matter how gratifying.
