RE: Make a worm bag from an old backpack?

I'm going to start a new worm bag soon, and wanted to understand my options when it comes to bedding.

For my first bag, I used mostly damp black and white newspaper with a bit of cardboard. I crumpled it all before wetting it, but now the newspaper seems pretty clumpy. Is that OK?

It'd be easiest for me just to use shredded paper throughout the bag, including the bottom, but would that be a problem because it dries too quickly?

If I were to just use damp shredded cardboard for the bottom layer (the layers being the bottom one, the food, and then shredded paper to cover the food), would that be OK?

Or should I really be mixing in newspaper as well?

On a related note, with the high airflow in a worm bag, I often wonder if I'm keeping it wet enough. Does anyone have a good rule of thumb for how they decide if they've wet down their worm bag enough?

thanks for your input,

Paul
