Worms shouldn't eat living roots. Are they actually killing the plants?

I also thought about how to kill any coccoons left in my castings when I used them. I plan to use a couple batches soon in some inside plants and don't want the worms to hatch. I do not think they can do any damage to the plants, however. But I do not want any escapees etc.

What I thought I would do is what you should NEVER do to a worm bin. Basically put them in a dark, lidded container and let it sit on concrete in the full sun. If you have a balcony at your apt, then that is the perfect place.

Cocoons are remarkably resilient though, you might find it won't make much difference.
