What happened?

My worm bin is about 3 months old. i started with 1000 red wigglers. Mistakes, poor instructions, etc. killed some off initially, but a few weeks ago things looked great except for vinegar flies. i read that meant overfeeding so i backed off for a while.

When I checked the bin the other day most of my grown-ups are gone. A number are in the lower bin. The top bin is ready to harvest based on my understanding of this. however, it has hundreds of juveniles. While juveniles are great and i understand a sign that things are going welll in the bin, where are the adults? Could I have gotten 1000 worms all at the same age so they all died at the same time? Is something killing my worms but not harming juveniles? i have white mites and some brown but nothing horrible. The compost smells as it should, like clean dirt.

I am very confused. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
