over-winter

I know this is something I dont have to worry about right now but its still a thought. Last week my land lord did some work inside where I keep my bin and so my girlfriend didnt have to move my bin I put it in my greenhouse, the next day they were all dead. It wasnt hot in there I left the door open slighly and the fan going. But the odd thing was is that i had some in a ice cream container(from when I harvested some castings) in there for about a week and they were all alive. Can anybody explain this? My main bin is a small rubber maid container, I want to make a bigger bin permanent outside but what about winter it can get pretty cold here -20C(0F), what are my options
