Have you kissed your worms today?

This story about gardening in a pre-school has the following 'vignette' about children's reactions. I have not been tempted to kiss my worms, but do feel affection for them, so maybe different only in a degree from the 5 year old.

...snip...Vignette 2: A handful of students are peering into a large Styrofoam container filled with dirt, decomposing food and more than 2,000 worms. This eventually will become compost for the garden. Tyler Spears, also 5, grabs a handful and, before anyone can notice, puts it toward his mouth. "I just kissed a worm!" he exclaims.

Kids are so much fun! When I get my own classroom I am going to set up a bin for food scraps etc. The kids can learn so much from worms.

In addition to children's natural generosity of spirit, the teacher obviously had a lot to do with that child's loving feeling for the worm.["our friends, they help, etc"] As a former Montessori teacher, I have a collection of memories similar to this story. I hope you soon get your classroom!

Thanks Borderbarb! I am in night school getting my masters in education. I will be a student teacher next year then year after that I will be a teacher! Then I should have enough worm experience to bring them in the classroom.

I figure the kids can bring lunch scraps back to feed the worms. Also, the kids can grow plants with some VC if I do it right.

I see so many lessons from worms!!

No disecting of worms though!
