A little butter?

I've been avoiding any leftover cooked vegetables in the rubbermaid bin because we usually saute in butter (Not oleo). But what harm would a little bit of butter do in an indoor bin?

I often put rice with a bit of margerine on it in the worm bin and don't think anything of it. So many of my scraps have some fats on them that I only worry about the biggies like actual meat.

Joe, I am not sure if it is OK or not. Margarine/Oleo is plant based so it is not such an issue, but real butter is animal based, therein lies the crux. I wonder the same thing. Butter is the oil of choice in my home because it is healthier for you. But I am not certain if it is safe to feed to worms, and if it is safe... will you have to deal with it going rancid in the bin and smelling? Let me know if you find out though. I am very interested to know :)

RE: A little butter?

Ive had small amounts of butter/margarine/vegetable oil in my bins. Its usually only when i forget to put it in my normal compost pile. It will break down eventually, however in a closed environment it is usually best to avoid something that will "smother" them. Oils produce a layer that sometimes will not allow anything to pass through them.

Cautions against allowing meat and dairy products in the bin should be respected, but should also be kept in perspective. A little butter clining to sauted veggies is unlikely to have any significant vermin attracting potential at all in a newly set up bin; a bit of cheese, a stip of bologna remaining on a bread crust and milk-soaked breakfast cereal will almost never negatively impact a mature system in any way.

Don't let the bit of butter used in cooking worry you.
