Alas, when I looked this morning the object in question was not in sight and there was no concentration of new borns. There was, however, quite a herd of adult worms on the inside of the lids of all three stacks. I checked the barometer but there had been no significant change in pressure. the weather is bright and sunny, temp, 60F. My farm is in the basement and the temp there is 68F and does not vary by more than 1F year round.

This may help to identify cocoons.

It's there again. Same place but further toward the center of the lid. This time I took a closer look, using a magnifying glass. I think it is some sort of grub worm but I could detect no motion. Til I get definite proof of what it is I will refer to it as the pseudo cocoon. That has a nice ring doesn't it? Ah, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Pseudo Cocoon, or Indiana Jones and the Pseudo Cocoon. There could be a fortune in this.
