Vermicomposting

when to change bedding?

I recently cleaned out my worm bin and added coconut coir instead of shredded paper for bedding because I didn't like how mushy the paper got and my worms didn't do that well. For those of you that use coir, how do you tell when it is time to add new bedding? With shredded paper it was always obvious, but I wonder how I will know with the coir.

When the coir looks and feels like soil.

Coir takes longer to break down than paper. It will have to break down before the worms can work on it.

As with paper you still need drain holes for the leachate to drain out. And you need to keep adding more bedding to keep the bin from getting too wet.
