Mixed castings into bedding/soil/compost trouble?

Gardeniera

I mixed the heavy casting, not quite mud, on the bottom of the tray into the lighter soil on the surface. Is this a bad practice, I just got a tray type vermicomposter and am really new to this.

The bedding seems to be made up of soil and some veggie scraps, only an ounce of worms are in there.

Did I do wrong by mixing the castings into the soil on top?

I just got the tray system and the home/seller just put some stuff in it to keep the worms alive, so I think it is soil or compost on the surface.

I like the idea of mixing the heavy castings on the bottom so as to keep things aerobic, is this not a good practice?
