We have a recycling program in our city for those things so I've never tried but I imagine that the wax (or whatever they line the inside with) would slow down the decomposition process. Shredding usually helps things along for just about any material.

I've been putting ours out for recycling pick-up also, but I'm trying to reduce the amount of stuff that I have hauled away as much as possible. I'm currently putting almost all of our paper and cardboard waste through the worm bins.

I put them in regular hot compost pile
They do break down a bit slower but they do go away

Sorry to resurrect a very old post, but I have a question. I'd, too, thought the coating was wax and was giving my milk cartons to someone to burn in their woodstove as fire starter, but learned the coating is actually plastic = quit doing that. Burning plastic---super yuck. Someone has had the experience of the coating decomposing in a hot compost pile?
