I think it might smell if the food is not covered.

hmm i will try this method if it starts to smell or get bad i will cover it up again.

The way I understand it, Red Wigglers like to reside and eat in the first 6 inches or so of bedding. They wont stay at the top if there is light there due to their sensativity to it. Exposed food also attract more than just flies. Cockroaches etc...will evetually zero in and come to the exposed feast...and then there is the smell.

Someone might say different but this is just my humble opinion...based on experience.

I typically just drop food in and there is really no smell in the vermicompost unless you overfill it. If you are concerned you can top it off with bedding.

The power of fruitflies floating in the merlot to cause room mates to go insane and make mean comments about vermicomposting tends to be underestimated.

well i actually covered my food now i needed to add more bedding to the bin so i just covered the food and bury it. might do this as when i see in the bin when it's dark the worms are not eating the food even though it is moldy. so im guessing they are afraid to be exposed.

and i didn't over feed i underfed. i live alone so the fruit flies don't bother me like i said it's an indoor pile so their is maybe 1 or 2 flies in the bin only eventually they die from spiders in my room i got loads of spiders but their all non poisonous and very small

Worms don't actually like the moldy food. You'll notice things like citrus peels going through a moldy phase first and afterwards the worms get to it (and citrus tends to mold more than other stuff). Worms are more bacteria eaters and molds competes with bacteria. If you get springtails, they seem to love the moldy stuff.

But yep, if it's light or even exposed and not humid they don't like to be on top. They don't know it's a bin and think what would happen in the wild outside ;). So a layer of paper (or I think you're using burlap) to cover it lightly will help.
