Low maintenance composting

I live in the hills just outside of San Diego - climate is a little more severe than typical San Diego - 30 to 110 degrees is our normal range roughly 10 inches of rain a year. We have eucalyptus trees that are always dropping leaves and have made a pile that is up to 2.5 feet tall and about 20 yards in diameter. I'd love to kill 2 birds with one stone & throw some worms at the pile and have castings come out the other end (as it were). Given the conditions (particularly the lack of moisture) is it possible to get some worms and have them survive?
