Identifying bin residents

Is there a site or a posting that anyone could direct me to which would have photos of critters I am likely to find in my bin? My bin is about 6 months old and I just tried to make my first batch of tea. On the surface of the water what seemed like millions of tiny tiny white things were darting around. They are thread thin and about 1/8 inch long. I hope they are something beneficial. Other than my wigglers, I am sure I have many residents in the bin that I can't see. Once they are airborne, I know I have fruit flies. Thanks for your help. I am newbie at this.

Welcome to the forum carmellia!

Maybe you have springtails?? Pot worms are a little bigger, and probably would not "dart around". A photo would help ID them, but probably tough to take.

I did a search on ggl for worm bin creatures photos, and many appeared. Take a look. Be prepared to be frightened by scary looking enlarged critter photos! Let us know if you ID them.

Any search engine should help you. I used google (ggl).

Most creatures found in a bin are either beneficial or not harmful.

You should be able to identify your residents with one of these threads http://www.redwormcomposting.com/category/worm-bin-creatures/ . Bentley is an acknowledged source for reliable info.

Thank you both for your responses. As a newbie I appreciate all the help I can get. Pete's suggestion of Springtails turned out to be it. When I went to the Bentley site (a great resource), springtails were the first thing to pop up in the bin creatures video. That is definitely what I have. They are so tiny. It amazes me how many must be in my bin and they are invisible in that setting. They were schooling like anchovies on the top of my tea water. Thanks again to you both.
