Thin layer of calcium

Anyone want to post about the thin layer of calcium that coats vermicastings? I think it helps keep them seperate. This makes for soil structure? Helps with water retention? Any chat about how castings help make good things happen in the soil between the weebeasties and roots and mycelium? My vermicastings look like the tobacco inside a cigarette but damp. When storing I try to keep the vermicastings in these seperate bits and not let them turn to mud or totally dry out or close oxygen away from them. Why are we going through the trouble to have castings instead of just throwing everything in a pile and getting compost.
