Watermelon and Pumpkin

I am planning on building an arbor from the example in "Square Foot Gardening" for vining plants.

The seed packets for my pumpkin and watermelon say they need 6 feet of room.

I was thinking of making it 5 feet tall by 5 feet wide in a square with solid netting across the top. I was going to have the watermelon climb up and to the top where I could secure the plants with panty hose. The pumpkin I plan to have vine away from the arbor.

There would be 11 hills 6 watermelon and 5 pumpkin and I will alternate them.

Am I crazy? The book never specifically says watermelon it says cantelope and melons.

I dont want to waste all of my yard space for pumpkin and watermelon. Also, will they cross pollinate and make the watermelon tase funny?
