Pollinating the Squashes

Posted by CaraM 6B - NJ (My Page) on

I understand that squash, zucchini and even eggplant get male and female flowers. When vertical growing, do they pollinate well or do I have to hand pollinate?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Cara - how many bees do you get in your garden? Either regular honeybees, bumble bees, or mason bees.

If the answer is - 'Haven't seen one in ages' then you will probably have to hand pollinate.

Sometimes growing a known bee attractor such as Agastache will encourage them to call by. Just make sure you aren't spraying anything insecticidal around now you are wanting bees to visit. They have enough grief with those poisons already.

I always planted marigolds in my garden to attract the bees. Worked well for me.
