squash spacing

3 questions: How close can I plant my various squashes to grow vertically? Is the measurement restriction because of space, or because the bed cannot provide enough nutrition to the plants? Are regular sized tomato cages sufficient (tall enough) for growing summer squashes - and winter squash?
