| I had the idea of using indoor/outdoor carpet for the paths in my vegetable garden to keep the killer weeds out (I grow weeds better than anything.) I priced it out at HD -- just a little more than I wanted to spend plus I don't have a truck, so would need to purchase delivery or rent a truck.
Last week, I found almost exactly what I was planning to purchase on Craig's list (new in wrapper) but for half price -- score!
Here's my carpeted vegetable garden:

How about that. I meant to click on the vegetable gardening page anyway and ended up here. Nice looking carpet. I have to ask though, do you take your shoes off before stepping into the garden now? You wouldn't want to track in any mud, LOL.

hmm...guess I'd have to garden barefoot if I want to spend more time weeding than vacuuming :) :)

Will water get trapped under it and allow mosquitos to breed? A friend of mine is an assistant D.A. in a Florida country full of elderly people, and, believe it or not, one of her cases last year was prosecuting an old man who had carpeted his entire front yard with astroturf so he wouldn't have to mow it all the time. The neighbors complained, because mosquitos were breeding underneath it. I hope that doesn't happen - I just think of that story every time I see indoor-outdoor carpet. It looks great, and I think it's a very clever idea. I just put thick mulch between my raised beds, and so far it's kept the weeds at bay.

It was placed over a gravel bed, and we only get 14 total inches of rain/snow per year. Am not worried about breeding bugs.

would carpet have any chemicals that would harm plants if i used it the same way arund trees or shrubs? I'm thinking I might use it to prevent the growth of the 'unwanted' along a windbreak I want to plant way out back.

I have read that only natural-fibre carpets should be used, such as sisal.

I use carpeting too. But I use stuff off freecycle and look for it on trash day. Any ole floor rug or bath mat will do. Cardboard works great too. I just turn the rugs upside down mainly because it looks better then abunch of differnt colored ones and I do avoid rubber backed.
